WEB Antwerp Announces Curfew to Get COVID-19 Cases Under Control

Northern Belgian City Reports Steep Rise in Infections

The northern Belgian city of Antwerp has announced a curfew in an effort to get rising COVID-19 cases under control. The curfew will be in place from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, and will be in effect for at least two weeks.

Residents are asked to stay home during the curfew hours, and only leave for essential reasons such as work or medical appointments.

Antwerp has seen a steep rise in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, with the number of new cases per day more than doubling in the past week. The city's mayor, Bart De Wever, said that the curfew was necessary to prevent the situation from getting worse.

"We are seeing a very sharp increase in the number of infections," De Wever said. "We have to take drastic measures to get this under control."

The curfew is the latest in a series of measures that Antwerp has taken to try to control the spread of COVID-19. The city has already closed bars, restaurants, and other non-essential businesses, and has made masks mandatory in public places.

It is unclear how long the curfew will be in place. De Wever said that it will be lifted once the number of new COVID-19 cases starts to decline.
